Summary of Services - University of Idaho District Heating Stack

The University of Idaho operates a 120,000 lbs-steam per hour district heating and cooling facility serving its Moscow, Idaho, main campus.  The facility’s multiple boilers are fired with both natural gas and biomass fuels.  University officials contacted Precision Energy in late June 2007 expressing concerns over the structural integrity of the facility’s 180-foot tall stack.  Responding immediately, inspection and investigation by PES concluded the unlined mild steel stack had been severely damaged from corrosion in course of winter operations of its biomass-fueled boiler and recommended its immediate removal.  The University concurred, and just 11 days from the initial contact, PES was on-site with cranes, workers, and traffic control.  The topmost, un-guyed 52 feet of the stack was taken down quickly, safely and efficiently with minimal disruption to the busy campus.

Continuing to support the plant’s management and operating staff, PES then immediately undertook an effort to develop for the University optimal replacement and restoration options for its consideration.  This effort culminated in November 2008 when PES completed in-plant installation of an all-new stainless steel-lined stack serving the biomass boiler.  Located away from its original position and on a new foundation and supporting structure much closer to the biomass-fueled boiler, boiler performance is expected to improve.  While mobilized on site for the new stack, PES also replaced the remaining sections and base of the older damaged stack, adapting it back for exclusive use by the natural gas boilers.
