Summary of Services - Glacier High School, Kalispell, MT
Glacier High School is a new 200,000 sq.ft. high school in Kalispell, MT. The scope of work included the boiler, fuel storage system, fuel reclaimer and conveyance to the complete boiler system, outlet stack and controls.
The Glacier High School biomass heating system is a hot water based heating system with a wood-fired biomass fired boiler at its core. The boiler is fed through an auger-fed firebox stoker mounted underneath the boiler. The gasses from the firebox make several passes through the wetback boiler and are exited through an induced draft fan and into a stack mounted in the school ceiling.
The boiler conforms to the standard ASME 30 psi hot water specifications, but low pressure (15 psi) and high-pressure (150 psi) steam boilers are also available.
The boiler is capable of firing on natural gas as a standby fuel when biomass is not available or when the wood handling system is being maintenanced. Transition to gas from wood can get done quickly and seamlessly to make sure there is no interruption in the supply of heat. The boiler is operated as a balanced draft unit which prevents smoke from the boiler entering the operations room.
The wood handling system is an under-pile auger-type system with a reclaim conveyor, bucket elevator and metering bin ultimately delivering fuel to the wood stoker. The pile auger is on a track which allows for a large backlog of fuel to be stored so that fuel deliveries can be minimized.
The entire system is controlled from a user-friendly touch-screen PLC panel that is programmable for several different variations of wood fuel. The system is designed to operate unmanned with only minimal attention needed to the entire system. During evening hours the system can be programmed to call out and page the on-call operator should there be a problem. In this case the boiler can be programmed to transition to natural gas without any interruption in heat.
Fuel delivery to the site is handled by live-bottom trucks, however, other designs for fuel delivery can be utilized as needed.
